KNOW YOUR RIGHTS WHEN YOU VOTE ON ELECTION DAY!
WHAT IF MY NAME IS NOT IN THE POLL DATABASE?
You are still entitled to cast your ballot. Here’s what you do.
You are still entitled to cast your ballot. Here’s what you do.
- If you are voting on Election Day, November 3, make sure you are at the right poll site.
If you recently registered to vote in Ulster County, tell the Inspectors your current address. You may be at the wrong site.
NOTE: Each poll site also has a town map, showing streets and roads and election district lines. It could be that the poll site closest to you is not where you vote. - Make sure the Inspectors have the correct spelling of your name.
If you have recently changed your name, your registration might be under your previous name. Tell the Inspectors and sign the poll book by your old name with your new name. - If your name is not in the book, the Inspectors must allow you to vote with an AFFIDAVIT ballot.
You will fill out and sign an Affidavit attesting you are a registered voter and you will vote by paper ballot.
NOTE: If you haven’t voted for four or more years, your registration might be INACTIVE. Voting by Affidavit will reactivate your registration and your vote will be counted. - You can check your registration status online
HAVE YOU MOVED RECENTLY?
Even if you forgot to re-register at your new address, you can go to your new Poll Site and vote by Affidavit.
- If you are registered in another county in NYS, go ahead and vote by Affidavit on Election Day in Ulster. Your vote will be counted.
WHAT IF YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE IS CHALLENGED?
Anyone at the poll site—a poll watcher, another voter, even an election inspector—could challenge your residency, citizenship or even allege you are a convicted felon.
- If this happens, do not engage with the challenger.
- The Inspector must offer you the opportunity to vote. You will attest you understand the accusation, you are legally entitled to vote, and then you will be offered a CHALLENGE OATH. If you sign it, you will be allowed to vote with a regular ballot.
